The International Touch Panel and Optical Film Exhibition (Touch Taiwan) was held for three days, from Wednesday, August 27 to Friday, August 29, 2014, at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall, Taipei, Taiwan. Komori exhibited together with the Komori distributor, Schmidtek Ltd.

Touch Taiwan 2014, held in Taiwan, which accounts for a large share of world touch panel manufacturing, is the world’s most closely watched exhibition where many makers of touch panel manufacturing equipment/components and materials as well as advanced displays participate.

Komori together with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan announced production technology for offset gravure printing bezel metal lines having L/S = 30/30µm and 5µm metal mesh set in a mesh configuration in one process to realize a narrow bezel on film for touch panels. At this exhibition, we displayed the operation of an 11.6 inch tablet featuring a ‘metal mesh touch panel made entirely by printing’ and also introduced mass production technologies, the results of joint research.

This metal mesh can replace indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent conductive film in touch panels and organic electroluminescent display panels and accommodate large panels; it solves the current issues of making these displays large and flexible. Further, the Komori Long Run Support System in the metal line mass production technology prevents three problems — ink drying on the plate, the admixture of foreign matter and blanket swelling — thus enabling a high yield of conforming products. In addition, the scale of the facilities/number of machines/quantity of materials consumption have been reduced, and thus mass production at lower cost than possible with the current photolithography method can be expected.

In the touch panel industry, where the demand for cost reductions is rising, attention is focused on the printing-only technique of making metal mesh touch panels, and many visitors came to the Komori booth. In particular, many concrete inquiries with serious questions and requests for prototype tests were received from touch panel/materials/ITO film makers from Taiwan, China and Korea, and this indicated the high expectations for mass production and cost reductions.

Regarding future shows, Komori and ITRI will jointly exhibit at CEATAC JAPAN 2014, to be held for five days, from Tuesday, October 7 to Saturday, October 11 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

In May 2014, Komori set up Tokai Holdings, a screen printing press maker with a record of performance in the printed electronics market, as a subsidiary. To contribute further to the development of printed electronics and to meeting the needs of the market, Komori will improve technology and provide total solutions with the merger of the technologies and sales channels of both companies.
